Liberia: For Salary University Professors Threaten To Boycott Graduation
Dec 27, 2005
Author: J. Cholo Brooks/Liberia

Professors of the University of Liberia (UL) have threatened to boycott the institution’s commencement convocation scheduled next month, if their salary arrears are not settled.

In a statement issued over the weekend, the university professors said they will not attend to any planned graduation program of the institution if they are not properly attended to by the university authority.

Speaking to our Monrovia correspondent, an Associate Professor at the university, who asked not to be named, said they were taken the decision to boycott the institution’s convocation exercise due to what he called “the insensitivity to their plight by the university of Liberia authority”.

The threatening boycott by the university of Liberia professors has added to countless number of civil servants who up to the Christmas season did not receive their wages, even those who received theirs were unable to cash same at local banks due to insufficient funds.

Last week workers of the National Port Authority (NPA), the Liberia Refugees, Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC) and the Bureau of Maritime Affairs (BMA) began their strike actions in demand of their salaries for the months of November and December.

These strike actions by civil servants seem to bring disrepute to the Charles Gyude Bryant led Transitional government, a situation, which many described as “Bryant’s complacency t to issues that affects us”.
