Three brothers in business to help their father
“Your Issue Here! Your Issue Here!! Buy Your Issue, Sweet Meat” words of three little children, with ages five, six and seven years old down town Palala in Bong County, as they went by with a transparent bucket filled with cooked dog meat on their commercial trail.
These kids were bumped into during the visit of GNN staff’s assignment in the area; rarely half dressed, said they were selling the “meat” as a means of survival to supplement the effort of their father who is also a fisher man.
The oldest one who served as spokesman for his two brothers, only called himself Junior said this was their regular business, “We sell this every day to people who travel on this way from Nimba County. Sometimes we make $LD150.00 a day, or more than that,” Junior helping himself with a piece of the meat said.
“The eating of dog by residents in this area is very common. Parents who supposed to protect these animals as pets encourage their children to sell them to people as cooked meat,” a visitor of Palala who preferred not to be named in an interview told the GNN.
“The selling of cooked dog meat is popular in Liberia now a day, even in Monrovia, especially at Red Light, the suburb of Paynesville and Gardnersville dog meat is sold to people in most cases at night time, as they camouflage it to be bush meat,” the lady given justification stressed of the selling of this stuff to the public said.
“Civilized people do not eat animals considered as pet. It indeed ugly for people to this by eating dogs, cats and other animal used as pet,” Pastor Jacob Gonda, chatting with the GNN called on those involved this act to desist.
