Liberia: Vice President Joseph Boakai boycotts dialogue meeting, cites security risk
Mar 19, 2008
by Michael Kpayili / Staff Writer

Leader
“We will remain calm in our advocacy for the immediate resignation of the Party Chairman, Dr. Charles Clarke, and his Corps of Officers as well as Hasan Kiazulu, head of the Youth wing and the entire youth leadership. Why the Vice President is afraid to come to his own party headquarters? After 4:30 pm, I will order all Executives of the Party out despite the arrival of Vice President Joseph Boakai”, says Amos Tweh, the head of the protesting partisans of the ruling Unity Party who have gathered to meet Vice President Boakai for a dialogue in the growing tension at the Party headquarters.

After waiting for over twenty hours for the arrival of Liberian Vice President Joseph Boakai to intervene in the recent protest at the headquarters of the Unity Party, it appears exceedingly disappointing after an infiltration of last minutes notice that VP Boakai has boycotted the planned meeting on what some Executives pf the Party termed as security risk.

The head of the protesting partisans said he received a last minute call from the Ministry of Justice requesting him to select three members of the protesting group to officially organize a formal meeting with the Vice President over a speedy resolution to the conflict. The last minute disappointment offered by Vice President Joseph Boakai inflamed even more tension within the Party. Some aggrieved Partisans requested that the Justice Ministry suggestion to select three persons to represent the entire body as a calculated plan to dilute their planned action while others see the Justice Ministry action as an appropriate decision in the right direction for finding amicable dialogue.

Speaking to Journalists after his forceful departure from the premises of the Party, embattled Chairman of the Unity Party, Dr. Charles Clarke maintained that he still remain Chairman of the Party but respect the views of all Partisans. Dr. Clarke has earlier termed the action of the aggrieved Partisans as a trash.

The protesting partisans, mainly Youth dressed in T-shirt marked ‘Unity Party is bleeding’ chanted slogans demanding the re-opening of local Offices in rural areas and the provision of jobs and scholarship for youth eager of receiving their share of the national cake.
