APS to Strengthen Liberia’s Health Sector, Gives 3 Million Dollars

The Africa Partnership Station in collaboration with the Embassy of the United States near this capital under the rubric of four U.S. Navy ships which has been in the country since March 17, 2008 Wednesday kicks off its donation ceremony.
The ships which are currently in Liberia’s waters are delivery more than US Million worth of medical supplies to the Ministry of Health and three other medical centers in the capital including the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, Redemption Hospital and the Logan Town Clinic.
More than 20 medical, dental, and veterinary professionals from the United States Navy are expected to offer training and care at various sites near Monrovia during a two week period. The Navy Seabees and other sailors on board the ships will assist in the renovation of selected Liberian schools and clinics.
The official kick off took place Wednesday at the Redemption Hospital with several government officials, the Liberian leader President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, United States Ambassador to Liberia Donald E. Booth and the entire crew of the ships witnessed the program.
Madam Denise Walsh a Senior Fellow at Yale University/Clinton Foundation in her welcome remarks said the crews from these ships were here to professionally provide humanitarian services voluntarily.
Madam Walsh said as a member of the Redemption Hospital family she was excited to know that Redemption, JFK and the Logan Town Clinic will be the recipients of these equipments, medical supplies and professional expertise donated by the APS.
“A Partnership about a true commitment the staff of these institutions and 500 other health care centers; clinics and hospitals are committed to caring for the people of Liberia”, Madam Walsh stressed.
She praised Dr. Walter Gwenigale, Minister of Health and Social Welfare for his hard work and good working relationship with her institution.
For his part, the Administrator of the Redemption Hospital, James K. Godson thanked the Liberian and the American Governments for the support given his institution, and also called for more support for the Hospital which is one of the largest in the city.
The United States Ambassador, Donald Booth who also spoke at the program called on the people of Liberia to help keep in good shape of whatsoever given them at their respective institutions.
He admonished Liberians not to always depend on the government all of the time, adding, you must help to keep your institution in good shape”.
