Liberia: Census extends by additional three days
Mar 28, 2008
by Michael Kpayili / Staff Writer

In an effort to ensure adequate and efficient participation of all residents in the ongoing census exercise in Liberia, the Liberia Institute for Statistics and Geo Services (LIGIS) has added three days to the timeline attached to the completion of the National Housing and Population census.

LIGIS is however instructing all Supervisors and Enumerators to redeploy all Census workers to areas that were not cover during the data collection period so as to cover the entire country. LIGIS release also expressed satisfaction in the ongoing census exercise and urged citizens who were not covered in certain locations within the bounders of Liberia to call a special hotline numbers for the smooth implementation of the process.

The National Housing and Population census started on a very bad note with several persons expressing disappointment in the way and manner the census was organized. As the census exercise progresses, the early fears established by Critics were brought to rest after loopholes in the process were worked out. The duration of the census was scheduled between “March 21-27”, 2008 but many citizens from the rural areas of Liberia complained of not being check by LIGIS. Against the citizen’s complain, authorities of LIGIS immediately extended the timeframe by three days starting March 27 to the 29.

It is not clear where funding for the additional three days would come from because LIGIS have constantly complained of constrained budget. The last census ever completed in Liberia was conducted in 1984 with an estimated population of 2.5 to 3 million inhabitants.
