Liberia: House of Representatives succumbed to pressure, release Dillion from detention
Mar 3, 2008
by Michael Kpayili / Staff Writer
The former Chief of Office Staff to former House Speaker Edwin Snowe has been release from detention after been charged with contempt by the House of Representatives. Mr. Darius Dillion was detained at the Monrovia Central prison last Tuesday after he (Dillion) failed to produce evidence that the Lawmakers were planning to manipulate the ongoing trail of bribery at the House of Representatives.
Mr. Dillion was placed behind bars recently by a unanimous decision of the House of Representatives for what they referred to as a "flippant" statement against the Honorable House, which according to them, brought the Statesmen to public ridicule.
At a special session last Friday to discuss the fate of Mr. Dillion, the Lawmakers voted in favor of the release of Mr. Dillion from detention and resolved that he make available his Lawyers to appear before that august body within a week to have his day in court.
The special session was necessitated by the concerns raised by Human Rights Activist and a letter written by the House of Senate, seeking the wise judgement of the Lawmakers to release Mr. Dillion from his detention site. Prior to Mr. Dillion incarceration, he (Dillion) was said to have implicated the House's committee on judiciary to an act of planning to expel former House Speaker Edwin Snowe and suspend Bong Representative Samuel Bondo as findings in the bribery allegation at the House of Representatives.
After his release on Saturday, Mr. Dillion expressed disappointment in the decision taken by the House of Representatives to have him detained which he termed as illegal. "I will never appear before that august body and any act to institute any action against me will be illegal", Mr. Dillion maintained. He vowed to resist any further plan to incarcerate him illegally.
Meanwhile, the Director of Press at the House of Representative, Mr. Isaac Reed said Mr. Dillion risk detention if he failed to appear before the House of Representatives with his Lawyers.
