Liberia:Opposition Politician Cornomia outline weakneses in Govenment
May 1, 2008
by Michael Kpayili / Staff Writer

Opposition Politician Joseph Cornomia has lashed out at the Unity Party led Government for its failure to match promises made during the campaign season to political reality that is currently unfolding. He said the Unity Party dominated government has done little to impact the lives of the Liberian people.

“The Government is surviving on rhetoric and too much talk instead of designing positive strategy to improve the lives of the people”, he maintained. The tough spoken Politician named some of the promises made by the Unity Party that is yet to come to reality as four lane road, job opportunities, improve security environment as well as President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf trade mark “Papa na come”.

What is unfolding according to Mr. Cornomia is fixing the crack roads and attaching unnecessary publicity to it. He also attributed the increase wave of armed robbery to government failure to act swiftly and decisively in combating robbery. He said government officials are paying lips services to the unpleasant economic climate that currently exist in Liberia and called individuals occupying public positions to retrospect on their job functions and view themselves in the mirror. The former Bong County representative expressed serious concerns over the high level of unemployment in Liberia. He said qualified and unqualified Liberians who are desperate to work are roaming from office to office seeking employment opportunities but to no avail.

“Everyone wants to be heard in this government. Instead of working, people are using rhetoric to buy time for their spoils”, he said. Mr. Cornomia said with the increase level of international support the Unity Party led government is receiving and that of the domestic revenue, the lives of ordinary citizens must be gradually building up.

In sharp rebuttal to Mr. Cornomia assertion, a senior propagandist of the Unity Party and junior Minister in government, Mr. Swesee Genesis termed as reckless and unfounded statement made by Mr. Cornomia. Mr. Genesis said after a decade and a half of civil war and rapid destruction of major infrastructure in Liberia, an abrupt hundred percent improvement of national recovery can not be done in two years. He said the Unity Party is concern about the improvement of the lives of all Liberians and is therefore committed in achieving such.

Meanwhile, the President of the federation of Liberian Youth has called on the Liberian government to double up steps in attracting employment opportunities for Liberian youth. Joseph Soukatue said the vulnerability of youths in Liberia is some attributing factors to their participation in violent crimes. He said Five Million United States Dollars out of the Twenty Million donation given by the Danish government must be apportion to attract investment opportunities for the security of job opportunities for the young people in Liberia. He challenged young people to desist from acts that would impact negative representation to their existence.

Ninety Seven percent of violent crime in Liberia are implemented by youth with majority been ex-combatants.
