The Visiting United States Science delegations to Liberia and alumnae of the Hunter College High School have expressed delight for the level of support the Hunter College High School has rendered to Liberian School System. Dr. Adam Cohen and Ben Rapoport say looking at the Library of the Booker Washington Institute, it was necessary to assume that most of the books in the library are believed to have been donated by their former institution.
Viewing several books on shelves after long hours of lecture at the technical departments of the Booker Washington Institute, Dr. Cohen and Mr. Rapoport disclosed happiness that students at the institution were taking advantage of the donation and called on other students reluctant about Science education to rethink and redevelop their desire for Science. According to Dr. Cohen, the entire layout of Booker Washington Institute provides sufficient opportunities for research. Making emphasis on research where one will seek to unearth facts, Dr. Cohen said not many students living in New York have been opportune to touch and see some trees as it is done in Liberia. Distinguishing between Bryophyte and Tracheophyte as he view trees from the outside, Dr. Cohen maintained that some trees grow close to the ground and basically have no true leaves, roots, and stems. He named these trees as Bryophyte and gave example as grass moss while the Tracheophyte is said to be trees that grow taller like the mango, pawpaw plantain and so on. He said once these materials are available and seeing and touching, both teachers and students must engage in a practical study that will create new ideas. The ability to think fast and to create new thing that will impact the lives of other according to Mr. Cohen makes one to be an inventor.
Commenting on students response to his first day of lecture at BWI, Dr. Cohen said as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Physics at the Harvard University and his experience on students and teacher’s interaction, not many changes were discovered. He expressed the confident that once the needed materials are made available to the students, the possibility of Liberia producing Scientist is certain judging from the willingness and desire of Liberian students to learn. He said once a typical Liberian like his former teacher, Asumana Randolph can leave from the School system in Liberia to make him what he is, it is also possible that others can do the same provided the opportunity is available.
He encouraged students to study Science and take their lessons serious if their activities will impact others and by extension their country.
Dr. Adam Cohen and Mr. Ben Rapoport are in the country as guest lecturers of the I-Help Liberia Project and LIMANY, and are expected to extend their lecture series to several institutions around Liberia including the University of Liberia, United Methodist University, Tubman High School and so on. The lecture series is primarily targeted at the continuous use of the Vernier technology recently introduced by the head of the I Help Liberia Project delegation in New York, Asumana Jabateh Randolph. Although the Vernier technology was recently introduced, teachers and students privileged of benefitting from the technology were overwhelmed about the uses of Vernier materials and expressed happiness over its existence.
